But if Katrina didn't wake up low-income people and minorities to the dangers of climate change and the indifference of their government to their fate, what will?

As for young people, you need to leverage a sexy issue (like climate change) and make sure the event has a social component (post-lobbying happy hour at a Richmond hot spot?).The Green Mileshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03465981178255092017noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29774939.post-81237089645024715672008-01-23T17:19:00.000-05:002008-01-23T17:19:00.000-05:00Different Priorities?Of the two groups you mention...Different Priorities?

Of the two groups you mention, it's very likely they have much higher personal priorities than saving the environment.

Poor folks (regardless of race) are just trying to survive and have little time or effort for such altruistic causes such as the environment. And any free time/money they have they'll want to spend on themselves - a little treat in an otherwise difficult situation.

Young folks, well, it's the struggle to grow up, get established, make your mark, make your fortune, etc.

There are always exceptions and we should be thankful. But as much as I hate to say it, I doubt we'll be seeing much from either of these groups (no matter how much the leaders of the movement try to involve those groups) until something happens to force the environment up their priority list.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29774939.post-35462361517019674632008-01-23T15:08:00.000-05:002008-01-23T15:08:00.000-05:00I think this speaks more to the demographic of who...I think this speaks more to the demographic of who makes up the leadership of all the volunteer and advocacy groups involved in conservation causes. Hopefully each of those white, over-30 folks are directing organizations that themselves have much greater diversity. Funding sources have a great tendency to only award grants to organizations that develop outreach programs into our inner cities, schools and low-income communities for example.Eileen Levandoskihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01783722203049706434noreply@blogger.com
