Tuesday night the Arlington County Board will take up the issue of new cab licenses, including enviroCAB's application to start a fleet made up entirely of hybrid taxis. Existing cab companies are expected to vigorously oppose enviroCAB, while Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment will speak in support of hybrid cabs. This is your last chance to tell board members you want to see as many hybrid cabs as possible on the streets of Arlington! Email board members here. Aren't there other environmental programs that would reduce carbon burning even more?
For example, why doesn't Arlington County collect bottles and cans and paper in all public parks and rec areas, and from all apartments and condos?
Why doesn't the county government mandate that all grocery stores, hardward and drug stores sell EFL bulbs and shopping bags made from recycled plastic?
I am not even sure if one examine the dust-to-dust carbon footprint of biofuels and electric hybrid cars that significant carbon is saved.
Reduce reuse recycle. County goals should be these goals first, and only then turn to unproven technology.
John, reduce/reuse/recycle are certainly important issues often covered here, especially when it comes to litter, waste, and landfill. It also has global warming impact when materials degrade in landfills, emitting methane. But when it comes to carbon dioxide emissions, the top cause of global warming, the biggest threat facing the planet in my lifetime, the burning of fossil fuels for energy and transportation are the major sources.
