Coming Soon to Arlington: Wicked Awesome Cake

What does this have to do with the environment? Ummm ... nothing.

No, wait! The continued development of Shirlington as an urban hub will promote smart growth! There.

Cakelove is opening a Shirlington location! I've heard nothing but great reviews about their desserts, and Arlington is desperate for quality bakeries. There's Heidelberg Pastry, locally owned and a loyal ACE sponsor, but from there the selection drops off quickly to the likes of Metro 29 Diner, Harris Teeter, etc.

Glad to hear about the cake shop, but wanted to add to your list of great dessert places. There is a little-known bakery off of Lee Highway in Arlington, I think at the Harrison Street shopping center or thereabouts, called Mother's Macaroons. The confections there are to DIE for, and very few people know about the place.

Having Cake Love in Shirlington should be fun. Tell me more about Shirlington as a "smart growth" model, please.

Well between Carlyle's banana pudding, Guapo's margaritas, and the chocolate mousse cake at Luna, there are lots of ways to grow while you're in Shirlington :)

Shirlington is certainly a model mixed-use development, letting people walk from home to office to dinner to home again. And with the new theater and library, there will be more options than ever! I'm also excited about the new bus station, transit hasn't been ideal in Shirlington, with the few parking lots filling up fast on weekends, but a great bus station like that is probably the next best thing to rail. What do you think, Googla? And will you be at the Beers with the Bloggers event?

Hi Miles, I won't be able to make that event, but it sounds like fun. There are definitely too many places in the Village at Shirlington to "grow" LOL. I just read your post about the environmental impact of multi-unit versus single-unit dwellngs. That makes me feel good to be on the lesser impact side :) I don't walk to work, but I do take Metro bus there. Shirlington has excellent bus service during commuting times, and certainly the covered station will be a boost. I don't know what the solution is for other times. One certainly doesn't want empty buses running constantly. I don't think that the problem is unsolvable. It will have to have input from potential riders.
