Who're You Gonna Believe, The American Petroleum Institute Or The Green Miles?

From today's story on the presidential oil disaster commission's final report in E&E News (subscription required):

[American Petroleum Institute] president and CEO, Jack Gerard said earlier this week at an event in Washington that "the general public today believes [the Gulf oil disaster] was an isolated incident."

"When you look at the experience of the industry, we've been in the Gulf for over 65 years and have drilled over 42,000 wells. This clearly was a rare incident," Gerard said.

Environmentalists offered a different take.

"Reality shows us that oil disasters are tragically common," Miles Grant, a spokesman for the National Wildlife Federation, wrote in an e-mail to reporters this morning. "The Deepwater Horizon wasn't even the only oil rig explosion in the Gulf last year -- another blast in September injured a worker and sent a plume of thick black smoke into the sky."

The Green Miles Gets Parodied

I actually have no idea if this is parody or just coincidence, but it was fun to see my name in an article from Brown University's student satirical newspaper, The Brown Noser, Students Outraged Over Murderer's Use of Non-Biodegradable Bags to Store Victims' Limbs:

Police first received word of Partridge's criminal act from one of his neighbors, Miles Grant, who discovered Partridge's grisly handiwork on a routine trip to the neighborhood compost bin.

"It was the most terrible thing I ever saw," says Grant. "I'm taking my petunias to the compost bin and I see something sort of reflective poking out of the leaves. I brush the area off and then blam, I see 'em. Bags and bags of bloody body parts. I mean, did he really think people wouldn't notice that there were plastic bags in the compost bin?"

UNACCEPTABLE. Besides, as everyone knows, only plant matter goes in the compost bin. Can't have raccoons dragging your victim's leg across the street. I mean, that's just green psychopathy 101.

The Green Miles: Now New & Improved!

My buddy Fitz recently launched a blog called Every Day Father. It's a brutally honest, laugh-out-loud funny account of his efforts to be a better father -- both his touching successes and down-goes-Frazier-level failures. As I watched him develop the blog & tinkered with the format, I came to the startling realization that his blog, in which he's invested dozens of hours, actually looked better than my blog, in which I've invested thousands of hours.

So now that my work for the National Wildlife Federation reporting on the Gulf oil disaster has shifted from intense crisis coverage to long-term disaster response & I'm back to having more spare time to blog, I decided to spruce up look of TheGreenMiles.com. New layout, new banner, cleaned-up links section, and improved options for subscribing & sharing.

With a more normal work schedule, I'll do my best to get back to posting daily. 100,000 Thanks (and Counting)

Sometime last week while I was in Louisiana covering the BP oil spill for the National Wildlife Federation, The Green Miles passed 100,000 visits.

When I started this blog nearly four years ago, the environment was what I did to forget about work. I wasn't happy as a local TV news producer covering murder, fires & car accidents, so I began volunteering with Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment, getting involved in Arlington Young Democrats & reading blogs like Raising Kaine (now Blue Virginia).

I never imagined it would lead to anyone would pay me to write their blog posts for them. Or that if they did, they'd allow me to keep writing The Green Miles in my spare time with full editorial independence.

So I'm thankful that you've kept reading, I'm thankful for what all those clicks have helped me achieve & I'm thankful that even as The Green Miles becomes a comparatively "old" blog I still look forward to posting as often as I can.
